The House on Mango Street:
The main character move into a new home, or an apartment on Mango Street. The family thought that they will go live in a new home that make them happy, but it was unexpected of them moving into a broken, or unfix old home. This also cause the family to have a difficult time living there.
Hairs:
The main character is telling about her hair and describes that each of her family member have a different kind of hair. She also describes the smell of her mother’s hair, but mostly people describe each other by their looks of their hair.
Boys & Girls:
The main character explains the differences between boys and girls which they live in different lives world, or society from each other. This is happening between her and her siblings. She also wants a best friend, or someone to talk to. When she talks about herself being the red balloon tied on an anchor, it means that she wants to escape, or leave Mango Street, but she can't.
My Name:
The main character was discovering what her name means and where it came from. Her name, "Esperanza" came from her grandmother and the meaning of her name is a "wild horse of a woman" which also means that her grandmother was trapped somewhere. Esperanza's name also has a meaning in Chinese and Mexico. Students from her school pronounce her name different which cause the understanding and power of the language you want to say, or identity her name.
Cathy Queen of Cats:
Esperanza explains that she's somewhere related to the "queen of France" because Cathy owns a lot of cats and they are neighbors. Cathy also says that the neighborhood is starting to get bad getting bad because people are moving and they Mexicans, or Latinos. Esperanza thinks that this was racism to her and towards the other people in the neighborhood, but Cathy just wants to live a better life, or dream for herself that Mexicans, or Latinos don't move into the neighborhood anymore.
Our Good Day:
Esperanza started to make two new friends. In Boys & Girls, she up move into her new home and she didn't have friends until she met Rachel and Lucy. Cathy started to make mean comments about Rachel and Lucy because they are poor and they aren't dress right, but Esperanza didn't care of how they looked like. Real friends should support respect each other no matter what because it doesn't matter base of what they look like.
Laughter:
Esperanza explains that she and Nenny don't look alike, but they have some stuff in common about being sisters. This starts her bets understanding more about Nenny . Esperanza doesn't really talk about herself, or identity of who she is because she was used to being lonely while she was growing up.
