The Book Club Of One

I thinks it’s helpful to talk the reading the people that are interested in the book, if they want to understand the story in a better way. If they know what I’m talking about, then I feel glad. If they don’t know what I’m talking about, well I would try to give an easier way, or give quotes about the story and direct them to see if they understand the story.

Brave New World Chapter 11

Hint:

The Chief Bottler, the Director of Predestination, three Deputy Assistant Fertilizer-Generals, the Professor of Feelies in the College of Emotional Engineering, the Dean of the Westminster Community Singery, the Supervisor of Bokanovskification–the list of Bernard's notabilities was interminable.

“all upper-caste London was wild to see this delicious creature who had fallen on his knees before the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning–or rather the ex-Director, for the poor man had resigned immediately afterwards and never set foot inside the Centre again–had flopped down and called him.”
The Director decides to resigns.

“And Linda, for her part, had no desire to see them. The return to civilization was for her the return to soma, was the possibility of lying in bed and taking holiday after holiday, without ever having to come back to a headache or a fit of vomiting,”
People didn’t like Linda, and she was also going through depression because she keep taking the soma.

“It was John, then, they were all after. And as it was only through Bernard, his accredited guardian, that John could be seen, Bernard now found himself, for the first time in his life, treated not merely normally, but as a person of outstanding importance. There was no more talk of the alcohol in his blood-surrogate, no gibes at his personal appearance.”
Bernard was starting to feel important to the world because John being the “Savage”.

“the Assistant Predestinator came out and cadged almost abjectly for an invitation to one of Bernard's evening parties. As for the women, Bernard had only to hint at the possibility of an invitation, and he could have whichever of them he liked.”
While he is getting more “important”, Bernard decides to have more advantage to be with other women, too.

"And I had six girls last week," he confided to Helmholtz Watson. "One on Monday, two on Tuesday, two more on Friday, and one on Saturday. And if I'd had the time or the inclination, there were at least a dozen more who were only too anxious …"
Helmholtz listened to his boastings in a silence so gloomily disapproving that Bernard was offended.
"You're envious," he said.
Helmholtz shook his head. "I'm rather sad, that's all," he answered.
Bernard went off in a huff. Never, he told himself, never would he speak to Helmholtz again.”
Helmholtz was starting to get scared because Bernhardt was changing and he isn’t his usual self. Also, Bernard thought that Helmholtz was jealous of him.

"The Savage," wrote Bernard in his report to Mustapha Mond, "shows surprisingly little astonishment at, or awe of, civilized inventions. This is partly due, no doubt, to the fact that he has heard them talked about by the woman Linda, his m–––."
(Mustapha Mond frowned. "Does the fool think I'm too squeamish to see the word written out at full length?")
Mustapha Mond's anger gave place almost at once to mirth. The idea of this creature solemnly lecturing him–him-about the social order was really too grotesque. The man must have gone mad. "I ought to give him a lesson," he said to himself; then threw back his head and laughed aloud. For the moment, at any rate, the lesson would not be given.”
Bernard decides to write a report to Mustapha Mond, but Mustapha Mond got angry and he thinks Bernard is ready to teach the lesson of the world.

“At Eton they alighted on the roof of Upper School. On the opposite side of School Yard, the fifty-two stories of Lupton's Tower gleamed white in the sunshine.. Death conditioning begins at eighteen months. Every tot spends two mornings a week in a Hospital for the Dying. All the best toys are kept there, and they get chocolate cream on death days. They learn to take dying as a matter of course."
As John was looking around the place at school, he was realizing that this world was just becoming worse..

"Asked me if I'd take the Savage to the feelies this evening. I must fly." She hurried away towards the bathroom.”
Bernard assigned Lenina to take John to the Feelies.

“Fanny Crowne”
Lenina is the one who meets Fanny Crowne.

“She had spent one week-end with the Ford Chief-Justice, and another with the Arch-Community-Songster of Canterbury.”
People thought Lenina was also important because she was part of the Arch-Community-Songster of Canterbury.

"Sometimes I think he does and sometimes I think he doesn't. He always does his best to avoid me; goes out of the room when I come in; won't touch me; won't even look at me. But sometimes if I turn round suddenly, I catch him staring; and then–well, you know how men look when they like you."
John's confusion about how to deal with women, his simultaneous desire and guilt, means that Lenina also and for the first time has to deal with unfulfilled desire and sexual confusion.

“Looking down through the window in the floor, the Savage could see Lenina's upturned face, pale in the bluish light of the lamps. The mouth was open, she was calling. Her foreshortened figure rushed away from him; the diminishing square of the roof seemed to be falling through the darkness.
Drying her eyes, Lenina walked across the roof to the lift. On her way down to the twenty-seventh floor she pulled out her soma bottle.”
John and Lenina have grown up believing in totally different things. Lenina believes in promiscuity and getting what you want, while John believes in honor and virtue and respect. When they're upset, John turns to the truth and beauty of art, while Lenina turns to the oblivion of soma.

Brave New World Chapter 10

“In Iceland he will have small opportunity to lead others astray by his unfordly example." The Director paused; then, folding his arms, he turned impressively to Bernard. "Marx," he said, "can you show any reason why I should not now execute the judgment passed upon you?"
The Director was planning to send Bernard to Iceland.

“But the Director's face, as he entered the Fertilizing Room with Henry Foster, was grave, wooden with severity.”
The Director wanted to make sure that Bernard was at the place to go at and he scolds him.

“Bernard hurried to the door and threw it open. "Come in," he commanded, and the reason came in and showed itself.”
John and Linda entered the room, too.

“She held out her arms. Some one began to titter.. The laughter drowned her voice. "You made me have a baby," she screamed above the uproar.”
Linda hugged the Director and told him that he has a child.

“fell on his knees in front of the Director, and said in a clear voice: "My father!".. The laughter, which had shown signs of dying away, broke out again more loudly than ever. He put his hands over his ears and rushed out of the room.”
John told the Director that he was his father and the Director felt that he is getting fun of. He runs away after that.

Brave New World Chapter 9

“As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity.”
Lenina was tired and exhausted in this quote. She decides to drink six somas so she can go to sleep.

“They climbed into the machine and started off at once. At ten thirty-four they landed on the roof of the Santa Fé Post Office; at ten thirty-seven Bernard had got through to the World Controller's Office in Whitehall.. a half it was the deep, resonant voice of Mustapha Mond himself that sounded in his ears. "I ventured to think," stammered Bernard, "that your fordship might find the matter of sufficient scientific interest …"
Bernard flies to Santa Fe and contacts Mustapha Mond, who agrees that there would be "scientific interest" in bringing John and Linda back to the World State.

“They were gone! Gone! It was the most terrible thing that had ever happened to him. She had asked him to come and see them, and now they were gone. He sat down on the steps and cried.”
John thought Bernard and Linda left him from leaving to the World State.
“Half an hour later it occurred to him to look through the window. The first thing he saw was a green suit-case, with the initials L.C. painted on the lid. Joy flared up like fire within him. He picked up a stone. The smashed glass tinkled on the floor. A moment later he was inside the room. He opened the green suit-case; and all at once he was breathing Lenina's perfume, filling his lungs with her essential being. His heart beat wildly; for a moment he was almost faint. Then, bending over the precious box, he touched, he lifted into the light, he examined.”
John decides to destroy their window. He saw Lenina’s suitcase and it smelled like perfume and love.
“The zippers on Lenina's spare pair of viscose velveteen shorts were at first a puzzle, then solved, a delight. Zip, and then zip; zip, and then zip; he was enchanted. Her green slippers were the most beautiful things he had ever seen. He unfolded a pair of zippicamiknicks, blushed, put them hastily away again; but kissed a perfumed acetate handkerchief and wound a scarf round his neck..”
"On the white wonder of dear Juliet's hand, may seize
And steal immortal blessing from her lips,
Who, even in pure and vestal modesty,
Still blush, as thinking their own kisses sin."
He also decides to unzip her clothes because he was starting to fall for her like Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare.

“There was a humming in the air. Another fly trying to steal immortal blessings? A wasp? He looked, saw nothing. The humming grew louder and louder, localized itself as being outside the shuttered windows. The plane! In a panic, he scrambled to his feet and ran into the other room, vaulted through the open window, and hurrying along the path between the tall agaves was in time to receive Bernard Marx as he climbed out of the helicopter.”
John was trying to hurry up because he didn’t want to Bernard to find out that he was with Lenina and he had to go to the helicopter pad to wait for Bernard.

Brave New World Chapter 8 Notes

“Popé used to come often. He said the stuff in the gourd was called mescal;”
An Indian woman name Popé comes to Linda’s house and gives her a drug called mescal.

“One of the women was holding her wrists. Another was lying across her legs, so that she couldn't kick. The third was hitting her with a whip. Once, twice, three times;”
The women whipped Linda because they were about her sleeping with their men.

“"I don't know. How should I know?" It was difficult to hear what she said, because she was lying on her stomach and her face was in the pillow. "They say those men are their men," she went on;”
Linda didn’t understand why the women keep saying about “their men”.

“Nay, but to live
In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed,
Stew'd in corruption, honeying and making love
Over the nasty sty …”
This is in illusion.

“In the Other Place, she told him, people threw away clothes with holes in them and got new ones. "Rags, rags!" the boys used to shout at him. "But I can read," he said to himself, "and they can't. They don't even know what reading is." It was fairly easy, if he thought hard enough about the reading, to pretend that he didn't mind when they made fun of him. He asked Linda to give him the book again.”
John’s mom tells him stories about outside of the reservation which is the Other Place.

“He picked it up, looked at the title-page: the book was called The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.”
John find a book by Shakespeare, and Popé was the one who brought it.

"They are married.. all I can say is, it does seem a lot of fuss to make about so little. In civilized countries, when a boy wants to have a girl, he just … But where are you going, John?"
A girl John loved from afar marries an Indian brave... John is forced to stay out of a ceremony to induct boys into adulthood.

“The words awoke a plaintive echo in Bernard's mind. Alone, alone …”
John and Bernard are both feeling lonely.

"Of course; if I can get permission, that is."
"Linda too?"
"Well …" He hesitated doubtfully. That revolting creature! No, it was impossible. Unless, unless … It suddenly occurred to Bernard that her very revoltingness might prove an enormous asset. "But of course!" he cried, making up for his first hesitations with an excess of noisy cordiality.
Bernard promises to take John back to the World State if he can get permission. Realizing that Linda will discredit the Director, Bernard agrees to take her too.

“His voice faltered. "O brave new world," he began”
This quote is from Shakespeare.

Brave New World Chapter 8 Ideas

  1. Bernard ask to John about his life and what he is going through so far because they haven’t seen each other for a while.
  2. This affect the women in the Reservation by anger, and John learned about by Linda being hurt.
  3. Popé brings Linda a drug called “mescal” and a book by Shakespeare.
  4. John feels disgusted from Popé. He acts frustrated seeing Popé with Linda when she goes to their house. I think that Popé reaction that she doesn’t care what he is feeling.
  5. Shakespeare gives allusion from this story is that John wanted to stab Popé because he hated her which he is still frustrated.
  6. I don’t really remember the experience of how John felt alone. I think it might be he never around with anyone that he feels comfortable with.
  7. John wants to know what it feels like to be crucified because he wanted to stab Popé.
  8. Bernard propose to John that he was also feeling alone, too.
  9. John reaction was feeling happy about Bernard and Lenina were not married.

BQ Thoughts

No, I haven’t done anything recently for my big question. No, I don’t think about it when we don’t talk about it in class because I don’t think about this English, but mostly my other classes because I have so busy with them everyday.

My Online Me

When I search up myself (Abigail Ardenio), I see my last name being changed to Arsenio instead of Ardenio because not a lot of people have this last name. I don’t really think it’s accurate. This doesn’t reflect to my best self because I don’t really put anything online, or do active activities for the internet, but I guess for gaming so I can be the best it the game.
