Gil's Furniture Bought & Sold:
There was a store at Esperanza's neighborhood, there was an old man that own the store. his name is Gil. He leaves the lights off, but if he turns on the lights in the store, there will be customers have money in the store. Esperanza and Nenny decided to explore the store and the store was full of mystery items, and old broken items. Esperanza has been at this store once to buy a refrigerator when she and her family move in. Esperanza was scared to buy the Statue of Liberty because she was afraid to talk to Gil, but Nenny was confident to talk to him because she wanted to buy the music box. Gil told Nenny that the music box wasn't for sale.
Meme Ortiz:
Meme move into the neighborhood with his dog. His dog's name is Juan. Before Meme and Juan move into the house, Cathy's family move out of the neighborhood leaves the neighborhood so it became Meme and Juan's home. Esperanza describes the Cathy's house because her father built a tree house. She felt like she was in a jungle like Tarzan, but Meme jumped out of the tree and broke both of his arms.
Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin:
Meme's family decides to rent a basement to a Puerto Rican family. Louie was a friend of Esperanza's brother. He was lives with them at the basement. Marin older than Esperanza because she wears make and babysits kids. Another cousin of Louie wanted to take a kids a ride with he Cadillac around the neighborhood. His' cousin started to hears the police cars so he take the kids out of the car and drives away. When his cousin was driving away, he crashed into a streetlight and the policemen arrested his cousin.
Marin:
Marin has a boyfriend at Puerto Rico and she is planning to marry her boyfriend when she goes back there. Marin hopes that she can get a job at Chicago and meets a rich man at the subway who will marry her so he can take her to live outside the barrio. She also explains how girls got pregnant. Esperanza also see Marin at nighttime because she smokes and talks to boys and Marin wasn't afraid to talk to them. Esperanza just know that Marin with be waiting for man that will changed her life.
Those Who Don't:
People that don't live in Esperanza neighborhood think they are dangerous people because they have fear that someone will stab them, but Esperanza and her friend are never scared in the neighborhood. When Esperanza entered a neighborhood that she never been before, she starts to have fear and she experience what the outsiders felt.
There was an Old Woman She Had So Many Children She Didn't Know What To Do:
Rosa Vargas was a old woman had a hard time controlling many of her children. She was sad that she husband left her with the children. The children don't really care about what they do and the neighborhood felt bad for the children. Later on, the neighborhood started not to care about them anymore even if Angel Vargas dies.
Alicia Who Sees Mice:
Alicia's mother passed away recently and she does all the cleaning and cooking for he father. She attend to college and uses the public transportation everyday. She will study all night and she sees mice during the nighttime and that gave her a hard time to study. Her father explains that mice doesn't exist and tells that woman's job was to make tortillas for her younger siblings lunches.
